If you come across a snake while gardening or hiking, you most likely don’t know if it is poisonous at first glance. If you can resist the urge  Dodgy Snake to run or kill, take a closer look. A visual inspection will help determine if the snake is a hazard. From a safe distance, watch:

The shape of your head. This is the easiest and most obvious indicator of whether a Dodgy Snake snake is poisonous or non-poisonous. The head of a venomous snake is usually triangular or arrow-shaped. The exceptions are the non-toxic ones, which can flatten their head when threatened, and the coral snake. apkpure

Your eyes. Venomous snakes usually have an oval-shaped (cat-like) vertical Dodgy Snake pupil, while a non-venomous snake’s pupil is round and Dodgy Snake located in the center of their eyes. There are some exceptions to this general Dodgy Snake rule, said Ross Baker, owner and founder of the Oxbow Reptile in Duval, Washington. The exceptions are the nocturnal snakes (Hypsiglena). Also look to see if there is a hole or a hole between the snake’s eyes and nostrils, or on the sides of the eyes. The venomous snake has a heat-sensitive hole or pits that allow it to locate its warm-blooded prey, even in the dark. Non-venomous snakes lack these specialized sensory holes.

His tail. Most venomous snakes have a single row of scales on the underside of their tails. The Dodgy Snake venomous coral eel is an exception because it has a double row. The double row is common in most non-venomous snakes. (This method of identification is best done on sagging skin and not on a live snake!)

For most people, it takes a bit of courage to do field tests like this. “The fear of snakes is one of the most common phobias,” said Judy Delwache, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia. DeLoache conducted a study with a colleague on what these gliding creatures are.

UVA studies have shown how quickly people discover a snake before Dodgy Snake anything else. If you put eight pictures of flowers and one picture of a snake on a computer screen, Delwatch said, people would see the snake faster than the flowers. In a second study involving young children, children associated scary sounds more with snakes than with other creatures.
